On the Circuit: Waltz With Bashir

Though the Academy’s rules ensure Waltz With Bashir won’t be taking home any Oscar gold this year, that’s of little concern to the film’s director, Ari Folman. Surrounding the Sabra and Shatila Massacre in South Lebanon in 1982, Waltz With Bashir is a rare film – an animated documentary in which Folman recalls and, through re-dramatizations, re-lives the horrors of the slaughter of an estimated 3000 innocent refugees. In this interview with Zoom In Online’s Jim Rohner, Folman confesses that he doesn’t understand why animation as a medium isn’t taken more seriously, especially considering its ability to slip in and out of reality and convey images and thoughts live-action can’t. The Israeli filmmaker also talks about what inspired him to spend four years on the project and what he hopes future generations will derive from a film that he describes as therapeutic in its creation.
