The word ballast can be defined as “anything that gives mental, moral, or political stability or steadiness.” Steadiness is exactly what the characters in Lance Hammer’s film are looking for. Set in the Mississippi Delta during the bleak days of winter, Ballast attempts to capture the simultaneous beauty and sorrow that a landscape and its inhabitants can embody. The film won the Cinematography and Directing Awards at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival and marks the feature film debut of Hammer’s phenomenal talent.
